Model Railway
The history of model railways streatches back
many years, the hobby really began to get up a head of steam (if
you'll forgive the pun) when the well known manufacturers Hornby
and Tri-ang were battling it out for the top spot in the fast growing
new sector.
In the end it was Tri-ang, coming from a traditional toy manufacturing
background, which won the battle, and eventually bought out its
rival Hornby and has kept marketing model trains and railways under
that name to this day.
The early model railways were 'O' gauge and fairly large, thus
requiring quite a lot of space to get any kind of decent layout
set up. Hornby realised that a smaller scale would open up the hobby
to more people, those who did not have the space required by the
larger scales, and when manufacturing abilities had improved suffciently
to keep the detailing required by the enthusiasts, they introduced
the '00' or 'Dublo' range.
It is the '00' gauge trains that are the most popular today, and
Hornby is perhaps the most well known of all the producers of this
scale of model railways.
